Monel alloy rod is a rod-shaped alloy material based on nickel and copper. With excellent corrosion resistance, strength and comprehensive performance, it is widely used in high-end industrial fields. The following is a detailed description of composition, performance, specifications and applications:


Composition and type


- Core composition: mainly nickel (Ni, about 63%~70%) and copper (Cu, about 28%~34%), containing a small amount of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), silicon (Si) and other elements. Some grades are enhanced by adding aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti).

- Typical grades:

- Monel 400: Basic alloy with balanced corrosion resistance and processability, suitable for room temperature and high temperature environments.

- Monel K-500: Add Al (2.3%~3.15%) and Ti (0.3%~1.0%), and the strength and hardness are significantly improved after aging hardening, and the wear resistance is better.


Performance characteristics


- Corrosion resistance:

- It has outstanding corrosion resistance to hydrofluoric acid, fluorine gas, seawater, salt solution, hot concentrated alkali solution and other media, and is stable in reducing acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, and is not prone to stress corrosion cracking.

- It has better resistance to seawater and chloride ion corrosion than most stainless steels and can be used for a long time in marine environments.

- Mechanical properties:

- Monel 400: tensile strength ≥480MPa, yield strength ≥170MPa, elongation ≥35%, and still maintains good toughness at low temperatures (such as -200℃).

- Monel K-500: tensile strength can reach 1030MPa, yield strength 690MPa, hardness (HV 240~300) is suitable for high-strength and wear-resistant scenarios.

- Processing and formability:

- It can be precisely formed through machining processes such as turning, milling, and drilling, with good weldability (supporting TIG and MIG welding). It is recommended to use water-based coolant for high-speed cutting.


Specifications and shapes


- Diameter:

- Round rod: φ5mm~φ200mm (conventional), larger diameter can be customized;

- Square rod/hexagonal rod: side length 5mm~100mm, to meet the processing needs of special-shaped parts.

- Length: conventional 3m~6m, can be cut on demand, support fixed-length processing.

- Surface state: hot-rolled black skin, cold-rolled bright, ground and polished, etc., some need annealing treatment to optimize cutting performance.

- Delivery state: soft state (annealing), hard state (cold drawing), Monel K-500 usually needs aging treatment before delivery.


Application field


- Chemical and petroleum:

- Manufacture pump shafts, valve cores, reactor stirring shafts, resist corrosion from strong acids, salts and organic media;

- Oil well pipeline joints, crude oil distillation equipment bolts, withstand high temperature, high pressure and chemical corrosion environment.

- Marine engineering:

- Ship propeller shafts, desalination equipment transmission shafts, resist seawater erosion and chloride ion corrosion;

- Subsea engineering connectors, marine instrument support rods, long-term seawater corrosion resistance.

- Energy and nuclear industry:

- Nuclear power plant uranium refining equipment shaft parts, adapt to radioactive media and high temperature environment;

- Boiler superheater support parts, high-temperature pipeline fixing rods, both corrosion resistance and high temperature strength.

- Machinery and instrumentation:

- Manufacture corrosion-resistant springs, precision gears, bearing retainers, stable operation in humid or corrosive gases;

- Chemical instrument shafts, key components of marine detection equipment, meet high strength and corrosion resistance requirements.
